Between the mid 3rd and the late 4th century, Lutetia's left bank grew increasingly unpopular. The Early Roman necropolis and most of the public monuments were abandoned, and the habitation areas were partially emptied.

This process ended with the 4th century construction of a wall on the île de la Cité to protect the new city center.
