The Krak des Chevaliers has recently been the subject of two major studies. The first was published in 2006 by a German team under the direction of Thomas Biller:  Der Crac des Chevaliers: die Baugeschichte einer Ordensburg der Kreuzfahrerzeit. Of exceptional scientific quality, this careful and skilful analysis of the castle’s architecture is the most up to date survey currently available.

Another study was published by a Swiss-Luxembourg team under the direction of Werner Meyer and John Zimmer in 2011 (French version in 2012). It includes detailed records of three-quarters of the castle, as well as archaeological sondages and building analyses. The graphic quality of the work is remarkable.
