From the Sill onwards, and particularly in the Candle Gallery, thre are numerous charcoal marks on the cave walls. More than 250 of these have been noted throughout the cave. They sometimes consist of simple spots resulting from the accidental impact of a torch while moving through the cave. Whilst sometimes, more consistent groupings evoke the marks left when reviving a torch (known as a torch smear). Others still evoke guiding marks. Despite their diversity, they have all thus far been dated to the Gravettian period.
