A natural amphitheatre

The Skull Chamber has the same morphological features as the Hillaire Chamber: ancient subsidence explains the depression in the earth and the arrangement of the clay ledges in a crescent. Animals and prehistoric humans were aware of this layout if we look at the arrangement and traces left on the ledges and on their edges. The bottom of the chamber has been regularly flooded as evidenced by the deep footprints left by bears and the highly altered nature of the walls. An ancient pendant that fell from the vault became stuck in the clay filling: it was on top of this collapsed block, in the middle of the chamber, that a bear skull was placed.
