The Sill is a short section of gallery separating the Chauvet Cave into two more or less equal parts. This passage requires the visitor to move in a crouch for several metres, and is considered a key element of the cave; a narrowing which imposes a change in the rhythm of movement. This passage, currently narrow and encumbered by concretions must, during the period of human occupation, have been more spacious and less constrictive than today. However, it provides a change of atmosphere between the first chambers and the deeper chambers.
